Actual vs. Effective Check-In and Check-Out Times:
Some workplaces have rules like auto breaks that automatically deduct meal breaks, or convenience rules that allow workers to check in before their shift starts. For example, a worker may check in at 7:53 AM, but their shift doesn’t start until 8:00 AM. The system records 7:53 AM as the Actual Time and 8:00 AM as the Billable/Effective Time. Invoicing is based on the Billable/Effective Time.
Since rules can vary from workplace to workplace (and even from department to department), it’s crucial to educate workers and post reminders in areas using automated rules. Workers should know who to contact if their time needs to be adjusted to override these rules.
